code coping and the adventures of life

The misleading, misleading

Yesterday I had the chance to goto a conference that was centered around WordPress and using it to create, promote, etc your presence on the web.

While sitting there, I found myself holding my tongue more then usual. To start they were rambling on about how Twitter was the most amazing thing in the world, and how if you use twitter people will magically follow you and your blog will start getting 10,000 hits a day. It was more a Twitter convention than a bloggin one.

Next up, how to setup your blog… The answer given, pay someone. I’m glad people come to conventions to learn about something if they are just going to turn around and pay someone else to do it.

On a bright note, I did get to meet Mike, the creator of 9Rules.com, which is a great little site. Other than that, the pizza was horrible, the drinks were flat, and “SocialWayne” was a long winded waste of time who thought he was the end-all professional of “social media”

With more than 10 years in internet/web development and 6 years in the “social” world as a developer and a director, I can say that anyone one who advices you to have 10 twitter accounts and follow 9000 people needs to be educated on what social media is, and how to better reach your audience.

Email me, wcope(at)frenzylabs(dot)com And I will answer any questions you have and give you fact to back it up, instead of misleading mumbles from a social “professional”

My rant. Is. Over.

A short intro to using XCode 3.1 and Python(Cocoa) to develop desktop apps

Here we go.

I have decided to make this tumblr thing quick programming tutorials, info and videos (once and a while).

As little tricks come to mind, I will be sure to post them here for all to enjoy. If you have any thing you want me to discuss just shoot me an email at wess(at)wattz(dot)net.

done.

tired of development

Most programmers have, most likely, been in my spot.  Tired of development.  Its basically being tired of programming, looking at computers, thinking.   I guess you could say I am in a developer’s rut.  i have to many jobs to do and dont feel like doing any of them.  I just feel like bitching about everything computer development.

I guess this would similar to  writers block.  Maybe. I dont know.  Hopefully I will snap out of it so I can get some work done, make a few million and retire in 3 years. right…

 Until next time.

yeah…familiarity does a lot for productivity Drew

Holy Programming!

Recently I have switched from using PHP to using Ruby (Rails) for my web development. Having friends that are pure Rails and others that are pure PHP and some that are backing the Mono project. I have to say there is a lot to choose from.

To me programming languages are like religions, you have people that let you make your own decision and only present you with information, some that don’t care either way, and the others that try to shove their language down your throat.

I guess the same could be said about Operating Systems too, you have your OS X fanboys (guilty…), your Windows purist, and your die hard linux > * people.

So I leave this challenge to you, learn as much as you can, don’t let anyone persuade you. Just collect the information you need, try them out for yourself and use what you want.

Unless you are working for someone where your language is chosen for you, take some time to experiment with the many languages that the world has to offer.

What keeps programming fun for me, besides launching websites, is learning all the different paths you can take to get to the same goal.

By all means marry. If you get a good wife, you’ll be happy. If you get a bad one, you’ll become a philosopher and that is a good thing for any man. Socrates

over engineering

It has come to my attention that over engineering is a real problem in the development world. I don’t know, maybe I am just a simple person, but I think that you should keep things as simple as possible. Instead of trying to conquer the world, why not just take a city here and there.

Recently I have had the pleasure of working with someone that is an awesome programmer, but has taken something as simple as HTML page templating and made it so overly complex that you have no idea where its going and its very hard to adjust to. So our lesson to day, boys and girls, is remember to always keep things as simple as possible. When things start to get complex and over engineered its real easy to get lost in the code, world, and crop circle.

getting started

hello? anyone? heeellllooo???  Well I decided to get my tumblr on to see what this was all about.
